United Nations. In the Caribbean country of Haiti, about three million children suffering from violence, hunger and malnutrition are in need of humanitarian assistance. Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said boys and girls in the country face alarming levels of violence, which has already exacerbated hunger and malnutrition in a country with resurgences of poverty and cholera. Has gone.

Dujarric said that according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report, the number of children suffering from life-threatening malnutrition has increased by 30 percent since last year and almost one in four children are malnourished nationwide. UNICEF Haiti Representative Bruno Mace said the dangers and hardships children in the country face are unimaginable and they are in dire need of protection and support.

UNICEF said in its statement that children often find themselves in the crossfire or are directly targeted, as armed groups target populations in their fight for control of territory. The agency said children in Haiti are killed or injured on their way to school. Women and adolescent girls face sexual violence. There have been kidnappings for ransom, attacks on schools, including students, teachers and health workers. The violence has displaced thousands of people.

UNICEF said many children and young people in metropolitan Port-au-Prince say they are being forced to join armed groups for protection, which means food and income for the family. In addition to violence, hunger and disease such as cholera, Haiti faces a constant threat of violent storms and earthquakes, the statement said. Earlier this month, flash floods caused by heavy rainfall proved disastrous, followed a few days later by a deluge following the Grand Anse earthquake. Despite limited funds, the agency said it is scaling up its operations and expanding its presence in the region. However, Haiti’s funding requirement of $246 million is less than 15 percent of what is funded this year.
