The US has condemned the Taliban’s recent decision to ban university-level education for women in Afghanistan. Significantly, the Taliban government, while cracking down on the rights and freedoms of women, said in a new decree on Tuesday that female students in private and public universities in Afghanistan have been banned with immediate effect until further notice.
White House National Security Council (NSC) spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Tuesday, “The United States condemns the Taliban’s decision to prevent Afghan women from receiving university-level education.” A reprehensible decision and the latest attempt by the Taliban leadership to impose additional restrictions on women and girls in Afghanistan and prevent them from exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

Watson said that this unacceptable approach to Afghanistan would further isolate the Taliban internationally and deprive them of the legitimacy they seek. He said in a statement, “America is in contact with its partners and allies on this issue. We will continue to take steps to support the women and girls of Afghanistan and advance our shared efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan.”
