US border agents seized hundreds of metal spikes for fighting cocks and veterinary drugs in a vehicle that was inspected at the port of San Ysidro (California), on the border with Mexico.
The Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office reported this Wednesday that last Saturday the seizure of two men traveling in a van and processing their entry into the country with valid travel documents.
However, an inspection of the vehicle revealed a total of 690 metal spikes that are used to arm the roosters in fightsand various veterinary medicines that were hidden in different parts of the truck.
“Cockfighting is illegal in many countries.“Sidney Aki, director of operations for CBP in San Diego, recalled in a statement.
“This is an inhumane practice and CBP works to prevent cruelty to animals and to protect animal welfare,” he added.
The spikes or metal blades are sharp and pointed pieces, about 2.5 to 3 centimeters long, which are attached to the heel of the roosters with ribbons or ties and can cause injuries and even death to the birds put into fight.
Those spikes are illegal in the United States. where the purchase, sale, distribution or transport of sharp instruments for use in animal fights are prohibited.
Controversy over executions at the border
