A few days after the trial for drug trafficking against the former Mexican Secretary of Security, Genaro García Luna, who is being held in a New York prison, is held in the United States, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that the lawyers of the former police officer do not want the assets accumulated from 2012 to date to be known by the then official in the six-year term of Felipe Calderón.

“There are 2 things that call my attention right from the start, and I say this because otherwise how are people going to find out, one is that García Luna’s lawyers do not want to know about his assets from 2012 to date, that because he achieved it with private companies. Look at the reasoning, and nothing more than to be investigated until the 12th, what he accumulated in fortune, from the 12th onwards that should not be investigated, ”he said.

In his press conference held this Thursday, January 12, from the National Palace, the Mexican president said that another thing that caught his attention about the upcoming trial is that García Luna’s lawyers are seeking to call to testify (without giving the names). former officials and a former president of the United States.

“The second, what do you want high-level US government officials, including a former president, to be called to testify”, he assured.

What are the lawyers suggesting? that if Mr. García Luna acted well or badly, he did so with the support, recognition, and acceptance of a former president of the United States or high officials of the United States, speaking in silver”, he specified.

After assuring that the trial of Genaro García Luna, scheduled for next Tuesday, January 17, “is going to be interesting,” López Obrador said that hopefully the media in Mexico will disseminate it.

“Now the García Luna trial is going to be interesting, how they kept silent, applauded the moments of repression, torture, massacres, buying consciences of loyalties, now the trial is going to be very good, very good. It is very important to me to follow up, hopefully and the media are constantly reporting”, he commented.

“It is not going to be that the press and the media of Mexico do not pass this series and that people do not find out. It’s very important!” He said.

“Why do we care about this?, so that the truth is known and nothing like this will ever happen again in our country, non-repetition, because we lived in an environment of alienation, everything seemed normal for a long time, as normal corruption did, so that is why it is very important that know all this, the one who is informed so that it does not happen again, ”he said.

During the six-year term of then Mexican President Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), Genaro García Luna was the top security officer in Mexico and had previously led the now-defunct Federal Investigation Agency (AFI) between 2001 and 2005, in charge of fighting against corruption and organized crime.

García Luna, who is accused of drug trafficking and taking bribes from Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, leader of the Sinaloa cartel, He was arrested in December 2019 in Dallas (Texas, USA) and transferred to a New York prisonwhere he is currently detained and awaiting trial.
