Manitoba. A semi-trailer truck hit a minibus on Thursday in the Canadian province of Manitoba. At least 15 people died in this accident. Most of the elderly people (carrying elderly people) were on board the bus. The local police gave this information in the early hours of Friday.
The accident is one of the deadliest road accidents in recent Canadian history. A newspaper in the Canadian city of Winnipeg reported that the victims were on their way to a local casino. The accident occurred at the junction of two major roads near the town of Carberry in southwestern Manitoba, 170 kilometers (105 mi) west of Winnipeg. Assistant Commissioner Rob Hill, commander of the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said at least 15 people were confirmed dead as a result of the collision.
Rob Hill said at a press conference that sadly, this is a day in Manitoba and across Canada that will be remembered as one of tragedy and incredible sadness. There were around 25 people in the bus, mostly elderly people, he said. Police said that the drivers of both the vehicles are alive. However, he refused to say who could be responsible for the accident.
Media reports initially described the vehicle as a van rather than a bus. He informed that this bus was being operated by Handi-Transit. Handi-Transit provides transport facilities to the elderly and people with disabilities.
PM Justin Trudeau expressed condolences
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mourned the incredibly sad news in a tweet. He said, “I express my deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones today. At the same time, I also express my condolences to the injured. I can’t imagine the pain of those affected.”
