Bogota. Colombia’s Vice President Francia MarquezFrancia Marquez) said on Tuesday that his security team found more than seven kilograms of explosives buried beside a rural road leading to his home in the southwestern province of Cauca. He described the incident as an attempt to kill him. Francia Marquez shared a police report on her Twitter account, which states that a sniffer dog alerted about the bomb.
The bomb was made of ammonium nitrate, aluminum powder and shrapnel and was detonated by explosives officials in a controlled explosion on Monday. The Vice President has received death threats in the past as well. She described it as a new assassination attempt and said that fearing this, she will not stop advocating for peace and equality.
Marquez is the first black Vice President of Colombia. He was elected last September along with economist and former guerrilla fighter President Gustavo Petro, who is seeking to raise taxes on the wealthy, boost government spending and start peace talks with the country’s remaining rebel groups. Prior to entering politics, Marquez led protests against mining companies and illegal miners in Cauca, and was forced to leave his home village of Suarez due to death threats.
