Lahore. Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the failed assassination attempt on former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during his party’s rally last year. The police gave this information on Monday. “Two Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) activists Mudassar Nazir and Ahsan Ali have been arrested from Gujranwala division for their social media posts,” the police said.
Another suspect, Tayyab Butt, has been taken into custody on charges of helping the main suspect, Muhammad Naveed, in the attack by providing weapons, he said. It may be noted that Khan, who is also the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman, was shot in his right leg on November 3 while addressing people from a container truck in Wazirabad, about 150 km from Lahore.
Khan had taken out a march demanding mid-term elections. Police had earlier arrested prime suspect Muhammad Naveed along with his cousin Waqas. It was Naveed who fired at Khan and is currently in judicial custody while Waqas is in the custody of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT). The three accused were produced before an anti-terrorism court which remanded them to JIT custody for three days, police said.
Khan had recently alleged that the JIT members were being pressurized to retract their findings during the probe into the conspiracy to kill him. “Powerful factions are behind his assassination attempt,” he said. PTI claimed that “three shooters” were sent to kill Khan. The party claimed that the police have arrested one of the attackers and are on the lookout for the remaining two. Khan has accused Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sannaullah and ISI Major General Faisal Naseer of being behind the plot to assassinate him.
