Jakarta: A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Java island on Friday evening, injuring at least 10 people. It is reported that a person died due to a heart attack during the earthquake. Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the country’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB), told Reuters on Saturday that the earthquake caused minor damage to hundreds of homes, some offices, health and education facilities spread across the region in Central Java province.

The quake, which occurred at a depth of 25 km (15 miles), was felt by several cities in the Yogyakarta region, as well as in East and Central Java, Indonesia’s most populous island, the agency said, Reuters reported. Went. No tsunami warning has been issued. Earthquakes are common in Indonesia because it is located in a seismically active region. Indonesia, in Southeast Asia, lies in the so-called ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, a highly active seismic zone where different plates on the Earth’s crust meet and generate a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

Muhari said the quake damaged at least 93 houses as well as other buildings in Yogyakarta and its neighboring provinces of Central Java and East Java. He said that schools, health centres, places of worship and government offices have been damaged due to the earthquake. The agency is assessing damage to homes in Yogyakarta city and Gunung Kidul and Kebumen districts. Earlier in April last, there was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the north coast of Java. However, there was no loss of life or property during this period.

On November 21 last year, a terrible earthquake hit the city of Cianjur in West Java. At least 331 people were killed and around 600 were injured in the 5.6 magnitude earthquake. Let us tell you that in 2006 there was a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Yogyakarta, in which more than 6,200 people were killed and more than 1,30,000 were injured. Strong tremors of earthquake were felt in Afghanistan a day ago i.e. on Thursday (June 29). However, fortunately, here also there was no loss of life or property. The intensity of the earthquake in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan was measured at 4.1 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake that occurred here was the East South East region of Faizabad.
