Beijing. Two people have died and 12 are missing in a massive explosion at a chemical plant in northeast China. According to a press release issued by the local government, flames and plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the chemical unit complex.
The government of Panshan county in the city’s suburbs said in a press release that firefighters had brought the blaze under control. The local environment department is assessing its impact on air quality in the area. Officials said that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. It appears that the flames did not spread beyond the unit. Fatal industrial accidents are a frequent occurrence in China, the world’s second largest economy. The central government promised tighter security measures after a 2015 explosion at a chemical warehouse in the northern port city of Tianjin. 173 people were killed in the Tianjin disaster, most of whom were firefighters and police officers. In this case, several local officials were accused of accepting bribes from those who violated security measures.
