The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is set to begin this weekend and the host nation will open their campaign against Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday. Brazil is currently ranked No. 1 in the FIFA rankings and remains the hot favorite to lift the trophy. Brazil last won the World Cup in 2002, when it was hosted by Japan and Korea, defeating Germany 2–0 in the final.
The Seleção entered the World Cup on a 15-match unbeaten run, which stems from their last loss in the Copa América final against Argentina. Neymar continued his dominant performance for Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 with 11 goals and nine assists.
After a disappointing end to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil due to injury, Neymar had a point to prove in Russia in 2018. The 2022 World Cup is some sort of redemption for the PSG player as some are calling it the ‘year of Neymar’.
The odds favor Brazil to clear the group at the top and it won’t be surprising if they get three straight wins in the group stage after Switzerland and Serbia follow suit. Cameroon will finish last in Group G.
As they are clear favorites to win the group, they are also in contention to glide through to the knockout stage. They have not failed to qualify for the knockout stages since 1982, played in three finals and won two titles since then (1994 and 2002).
A top-of-the-table finish in Group G could see them face Uruguay in the round of 16 along with Germany in the quarter-finals. However, the World Cup is always full of surprises and anything can happen on the big stage.
Coach Tite has selected a strong side for the World Cup under the leadership of experienced Thiago Silva. They have two exceptional goalkeepers in Alisson Becker of Liverpool and Ederson of Manchester City.
In front, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli have been in impressive form at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta. Vinicius Junior is off the bench, but the 22-year-old has been a force for European champions Real Madrid to La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles last season.
Brazil has hopes of winning the World Cup and Neymar has to lift the trophy for the first time.
