Kennison struck the 71-year-old man with a bat before the victim was put in the trunk of a Mercedes-Benz that was linked to Turner.reported KTVN.
Police said Burchard traveled to Las Vegas to end his two-year relationship with Turner, the television station reported. He had been supporting her and their son financially, including paying their rent, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“There is certainly room for a lot of salacious speculation about what the nature of the relationship was,” Assistant District Attorney Pamela Weckerly said in court at the sentencing hearing, according to the Review-Journal.
“I think the facts of this case demonstrate that, with respect to Ms. Turner, this was a transactional relationship, to any extent.”
Turner’s defense attorney told the newspaper she was glad her client still had a chance at a life after prison.
“I strongly disagree with the state’s recitation of the facts,” the head of the deputy special public defender, Ashley Sisolak, said in a statement Tuesday.
“However, I am glad that Kelsey has the opportunity to rebuild her life in the future. I am also grateful for the closure for all parties.”
Kennison was sentenced in July to between 18 and 45 years in prison after pleading guilty and the couple’s roommate, Diana Pena, pleaded guilty to accessory to murder but provided prosecutors with key evidence, KLAS reported.
“She was content to leave someone she had known for several years, who financially supported her and her son for several years, to rot in the back of the car in the desert,” Weckerly said of Turner. according to the television station.
