BERLIN, 16 Jan. (DPA/EP) –

The German Defense Minister, Christine Lambrecht, presented her resignation on Monday after the controversy unleashed in the country as a result of a congratulatory video published on New Year’s Eve in which she spoke of the war in Ukraine with fireworks and firecrackers in the background.

Thus, Lambrecht has delivered his resignation letter to the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, as rumors increased about his possible departure from the Government after several members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) precisely demanded his dismissal.

Several German media reported on Friday that Lambrecht was already considering resigning to settle the scandal. It is not the first controversy in which the German Defense Minister has been involved, since she was also criticized in the past for taking her son in a military helicopter.

The Defense Ministry has also recently been in the spotlight after the chairman of the German Parliament’s Defense committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, pressured Scholz to deliver more main battle tanks to Ukraine.
