The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its first list of candidates for the Gujarat Assembly elections 2022. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will contest from the Ghatlodia seat in Ahmedabad. He is the sitting MLA from this seat. On the other hand, BJP has given the ticket to cricketer Ravindra Jadeja’s wife Rivaba from Jamnagar North.
BJP has fielded Hardik Patel, a Patidar leader who switched from Congress to BJP, from Viramgam in Ahmedabad.
Why this news is important: Actually, elections are to be held in two phases in Gujarat with 182 assembly seats. Voting will be held on 1 and 5 December and the election results will come on 8 December. BJP has announced the names of 160 people in the first list.
Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi will contest from the Majura seat.
Vijay Rupani will not contest elections
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s name is not in this list of BJP. Dr. Darshita Shah will contest from Rajkot West in place of Rupani.
A year before the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, Vijay Rupani, the then MLA from Rajkot West constituency, was asked by the high command to replace Anandiben Patel as the chief minister. Five years later, a year before the 2021 elections, Rupani, like Anandiben Patel, was asked to step down, and Bhupendra Patel was made chief minister in his place. And now Rupani hasn’t even been given a ticket. However, recently Rupani had said that he will claim to contest from this seat only if the party asks him to do so.
