The Supreme Court of Justice of Honduras authorized the extradition to the United States of the former Honduran deputy Midence Oqueli Martinezwho is claimed for three crimes associated with drug trafficking and the use of weapons, the judiciary reported on Tuesday.
A judge of First Instance of the Supreme Court of Justice “grants the request for extradition in the case investigated for Midence Martínez Turcios,” the Supreme Court said on Twitter.
On the 12th, the hearing for the presentation and evacuation of evidence was held, but it was not until the last hours that the former deputy’s defense was notified of the judge’s decision.
Martínez, who was a deputy for the opposition Liberal Party of Honduras during the periods 2010-2014 and 2014-2018, is required by the Court of the Southern District of New York, for crimes related to weapons and drug traffickinghe added.
The defendant was arrested on December 4 in the department of Colón, in the Caribbean of Honduras, according to the National Police.
According to official information, the ex-deputy allegedly conducted “businesses and directly supported drug trafficking” to the Los Cachiros cartel“providing them with weapons and facilitating the trafficking of illegal substances.”
Martinez, who would have received between 2004 and 2014 at least one million dollars from Los Cachiros, is accused of participating in a conspiracy to import into the United States “a controlled substance; manufacture and distribute a controlled substance with the intent and knowledge that such substance would be unlawfully imported into the United States, and manufacture, distribute, and possess a controlled substance on board an aircraft registered in that country.”
The defendant directed operations with heavily armed men between the east and west of his countrywhich mobilized shipments of cocaine from Venezuela and Colombia, and then sent them to Guatemala, en route to the United States, according to reports published in local media.
