Beijing. US technology major Microsoft Corporation co-founder Bill Gates met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday and discussed issues of cooperation. Gates, who came to meet Xi Jinping in the midst of tension in the relations between America and China in the last few years, called it a great honor for himself.
Describing Gates as his “old friend”, Chinfing said on state broadcaster CCTV that he was happy to meet him after three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Xi Jinping said that the US and China can benefit both countries by expanding cooperation. The Chinese President told Gates, “I think the foundation of China-US relations is based on the people. In the current global situation, we can do many things that can benefit both the countries, the people of our countries and the entire human race.
Xi did not give details of the meeting but stressed the potential benefits of cooperation which have been “hindered by disputes over human rights, Taiwan, security and technology”. The Microsoft chief’s visit to China assumes significance as Xi Jinping is trying to attract foreign investment to boost its slowing economy. Apple’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Cook also visited China in March. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is also going to visit China amid tense relations between the two countries.
