In Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, the case of a person’s health deteriorating in police custody and his death has come to the fore, after which questions have been raised on the police department. The relatives of the man have alleged that he died due to police beating. After the uproar by the family members, while taking action in the matter, the police have suspended many policemen.
What is the whole matter?
The case pertains to Kotwali Shivli of Kanpur Dehat. Police had detained Balwant Singh, a resident of Lalpur Saraiya, on suspicion of a robbery incident with a businessman in the past. The police took the man to Rania police station for questioning. It is being told that during this time Balwant had chest pain, so the police took him to the district hospital late at night, where he died during treatment. On the other hand, Sachin, the elder brother of the person who reached the district hospital as soon as the information was received, has accused the police of beating Balwant to death.

The family accused the police
Sachin, the elder brother of the deceased, said that Balwant had gone out for some work when the police arrested him. The brother said, “When we reached Rania police station, she was being beaten by the police. We asked why they were beating her. Our uncle, with whom the incident happened, was also with us. He told that when the incident happened He was with us when it happened.”
Brother further told that the police told him that he should be allowed to do the enquiry. They said, “No policeman or team gave us any information. The police department is responsible for my brother’s death. He came out of the house healthy, then the police beat him up so much and still haven’t informed us where he is.”
Many policemen suspended
According to Superintendent of Police Suniti, “The suspects were being interrogated regarding the disclosure of the robbery incident that took place on December 6. In this sequence, Balwant Singh was also called for questioning and he himself came to the police station. During this His health deteriorated. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he died during treatment. Taking cognizance of the allegations made by the relatives, the SOG team engaged for disclosure, Maitha Chowki Prathari and station in-charge Has been suspended immediately. A team has been formed to investigate the entire matter.”
