Demands that the Treaty signed with Macron bear the name of Barcelona, synonymous with “avant-garde, Europeanism and coexistence”
BARCELONA, Jan. 19 (.) –
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has compared today’s pro-independence protest in Barcelona against the Spanish-French summit with the demonstration next Saturday in Madrid against his Government and has warned that the “broad majority” of the population is between the two, in the middle.
This was stated during a joint appearance with French President Emmanuel Macron, after holding the Spanish-French summit in Barcelona, where they signed the first Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between the two countries.
Both leaders have been received by the independentistas with a protest, while the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonés, received both but without staying to listen to the anthem of the two countries, alleging the presence of the Army in Catalonia.
“I think that between what has happened today Thursday and what is going to happen in Madrid on Saturday is where the vast majority of this country is, both in Catalonia and in Spain, which is in defense of a Spain united in its diversity. and that is what the 1978 Constitution recognizes, in my opinion”, specified the head of the Spanish Executive.
In fact, when asked about the protest of the independence supporters in Barcelona -in which they have also booed and insulted the ERC leader, Oriol Junqueras, who has left the place-, the president has indicated that what “really matters is that today the Spanish Constitution is fulfilled in each and every one of the country’s territories, also in Catalonia”.
In this sense, he recalled that the Constitution recognizes the right to peaceful demonstration in defense of some ideals, “of anyone – he stressed – even ideals that go against the Constitution as has happened today in the city from Barcelona”.
And in this context, he pointed out that another demonstration is going to take place in Madrid on Saturday “where the opposite is going to be claimed”, he specified, making it clear that what must be done is “respect it”. But in his opinion, the “broad majority” of society is in the middle, between one protest and the other.
In any case, Sánchez wanted to “break a spear” in favor of Barcelona, highlighting the fact that the Treaty signed today with Macron bears the name of this city. Something that, he has said, represents a “tribute of respect, consideration and admiration”.
In fact, it has defined it as a synonym for the avant-garde, which is why it will define the Treaty for the coming years; of Europeanism, not only because what was signed defines the common interests between France and Spain, but also because of the “unequivocal” message it sends of strengthening the EU and “coexistence”. At this point, he recalled the investments that have been announced in recent months in Barcelona, among them, those of the multinational Cisco.
According to Sánchez, all of this has a lot to do with coexistence and harmony and responds to the complaints that the city has “rightly” had for many years that the State had not committed to it either in terms of resources, international visibility or in recognition of their institutions. “It is what we are doing”, he has riveted her.
