silicon Valley. India has everything it needs to succeed in the semiconductor industry, but it still needs to build its credibility. This view has been expressed by Ajit Manocha, head of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), an apex group representing the semiconductor industry. SEMI President and CEO Manocha told a news agency that India was ‘zero’ in this sector a year and a half ago.
At the same time, by 2024, there will be 100 semiconductor design startups in India. He said that today India is growing rapidly in the semiconductor sector due to the Rs 76,000 crore incentive scheme for chip making, large talent pool and skilling programme. It is ‘now or never’ time for India in the semiconductor sector, he added. It takes many years to catch up to this speed. If we don’t do this now, I think we will lose our credibility forever.
That said, India in my opinion has almost everything it needs to have a successful semiconductor industry in the country. We have talent, we have democracy, largest democracy in the world. We have the market. Population is the market. We are now bigger than China with 1.4 billion. Language is also with us. Almost everyone speaks English. At the same time, we follow international laws. So what else do you want? You have everything for the industry. “We are now fortunate that there are two leaders in the country, ministers like Rajiv Chandrasekhar and Ashwini Vaishnav,” he said. Then we have leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is very visionary. So I think all things are favorable.
