Karachi. Seventeen inmates escaped from Chaman Jail in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province during Bakrid prayers, while one inmate died after being shot by prison guards. Balochistan’s Inspector General of Prisons Malik Shuja Kasi said some police guards and prisoners were also injured in the violence and firing.
Kasi said that the incident took place on Thursday when Bakrid prayers were being offered in the open space inside the jail premises. “These prisoners had planned their escape from the jail and executed it during Bakrid prayers. When they were allowed out of the barracks for Bakrid prayers, they violently attacked the police guard.
Kasi said that during the same ruckus and violence, one inmate was killed when 17 others managed to escape after being fired upon by prison guards. “They seem to have got outside help in successfully escaping from the jail,” he said.
Kasi said that a list of the escaped prisoners has been prepared and some of them were jailed in connection with terrorist activities. Significantly, Chaman prison is located near the border with Iran and security forces fear that the prisoners may have crossed the international border with the help of their accomplices.
