Islamabad. The Election Commission of Pakistan (EC) on Tuesday issued a bailable warrant against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan. Apart from Imran Khan, warrant has also been issued against Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhary. The warrant was issued by a four-member bench of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
This arrest warrant has been issued on Imran Khan in a case of contempt. Hearing the case, a four-member bench headed by Nisar Durani pronounced the verdict. Now the hearing of the case has been adjourned till January 17. The Election Commission (EC) had last year issued defamation notices to top PTI leaders.
The Election Commission (EC) has said that Imran Khan and senior leaders of PTI had said extremely derogatory things about the Election Commission and the President in their rallies and in the media. PTI leaders had urged the commission to grant exemption in this matter but the Election Commission (EC) rejected their appeal. The Election Commission (EC) has ordered all the leaders to appear on January 17.
Earlier, the Election Commission had reserved its decision till January 3. PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary has spoken of going to the High Court against the decision of the Election Commission. He tweeted and said, ‘We will go to the High Court against the decision and will file a defamation case against the commission. This decision of the Election Commission to issue arrest warrant is in contempt of the High Court’s decision.
