Islamabad. The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as party president, while party supremo Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz has been elected as senior vice-president. The decision was taken at the general council meeting of the PML-N on Friday. In this meeting, Ahsan Iqbal was elected as the General Secretary. Apart from these, many other office bearers were also elected in the meeting. Other party leaders included Maryam Aurangzeb as Secretary (Information), Ataullah Tarar as Deputy Secretary and Ishaq Dar as Secretary (Finance and Foreign Affairs).
All of them were elected unopposed to these posts, which in a way shows unity in the PML-N, but in reality is a clear indication of the Sharif family’s hold on the party, as they have chosen every office bearer of the party. In 2018, his younger brother Shehbaz was handed over the reins of the party after the Supreme Court disqualified former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from the post of prime minister and later barred him from leading the party as president. Was.
It is believed that Nawaz Sharif, who has been living in London since 2019, takes all major decisions in the party from behind the scenes and all decisions in the party are taken with his consent. Nawaz Sharif went to London in 2018 for treatment. Sources say that even the top appointments in the government are made by him and he was instrumental in replacing Miftah Ismail with Ishaq Dar as finance minister last year.
After being elected as the Speaker, Shehbaz Sharif expressed his desire to act as a ‘sainik’ of his elder brother. He said his elder brother would return before the elections to lead the party. Maryam Nawaz, considered to be the successor of Nawaz Sharif, said in her address that Shehbaz Sharif does not take any decision without consulting his elder brother.
