Balata Refugee Camp (West Bank). Palestinian children and families are terrified by nightly raids by Israeli soldiers. In one such operation, the Israeli army raided the house of Yusuf Mesheh at 3 am while he was sleeping on the cot. The 15-year-old Palestinian boy said that within no time he was lying on the floor as soldiers punched him to the ground and shouted insulting remarks.
An Israeli soldier struck his mother in the chest with the butt of his rifle and locked her in the room, where she screamed for her sons’ safety. Youssef and his 16-year-old brother Wael were driven out of their home in the Balata refugee camp in the northern West Bank. At that time Yusuf was not even wearing his spectacles due to which he was not in a position to see properly.
About the incident, Yousuf told The Associated Press, “I can’t forget that night. I still hear gunshots and screams when I go to sleep.” According to a forthcoming report by the Israeli human rights organization Hamokid, the Israeli military arrested and interrogated hundreds of Palestinian teenagers in the West Bank in 2022, never issuing summons or informing the children’s families. Palestinians recount many such incidents and remain fearful of an impending threat.
