Jerusalem. In Israel, a large number of people have gathered and demonstrated in various cities of the country to protest against the new government’s plan to implement sweeping reforms in the judicial system. Israeli media quoted police as saying that more than 80,000 protesters protested in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening. Demonstrations were also held in other cities.
The demonstration was said to be one of the biggest protests in the country in recent years. Protesters in Tel Aviv chant “Stop the madness – fight for our country” and against President Isaac Herzog. Israel’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced a series of reforms last week, including allowing parliament to override Supreme Court rulings with a simple majority.
Also politicians would have more influence in the appointment of Supreme Court judges and legal advisors to ministries. Protesters say these reforms will undermine the Supreme Court and democracy in the country.
