Dhaka. Six people were killed when an ambulance and a truck collided early Tuesday in Shariatpur district, about 101 kilometers south of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. The accident occurred at around 04:20 a.m. local time when a Dhaka-bound ambulance collided with a CNG truck due to poor visibility amid thick fog, said Mohammad Selim Miya, deputy director of the fire service and civil defence.
The collision was so severe that all six people including the driver died on the spot. The dead include patients and the ambulance driver and a paramedic. They could not be immediately identified. Rescue workers say they had to struggle for hours to get the bodies out of the damaged ambulances.
Bangladesh has one of the highest road accident fatality rates in the world due to bad highways, poorly maintained vehicles, violation of traffic rules by unqualified drivers and lack of monitoring by the traffic department. A total of 10,858 people were killed and 12,875 others were injured in 7,617 road, railway and waterway accidents across the country in 2022, according to a report by local organization Bangladesh Passengers Welfare Association.
Air raid warning issued in many areas of eastern Ukraine
An air raid warning has been issued for Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Poltava and Kirovohrad regions in eastern Ukraine. This information is provided according to the online air raid alert map of the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine. Air raid sirens also sounded in the Kyiv-controlled part of Russia’s Zaporizhia region. On 10 October last year, two days after Ukraine’s terrorist attack on Russia’s Crimean bridge, Russia began attacking Ukraine’s infrastructure and carried out attacks on electricity, defense industry, military command and communication facilities in Ukraine. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal said after the attacks on 15 November last year that almost half of the country’s power grid had been put out of service. President Volodymyr Zelensky said in December 2022 that it is now impossible to fully restore Ukraine’s power grid.
