Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan has got bail from the Allahabad High Court in the PMLA case. The way has been cleared for the release of Kappan, who has been in jail for two years. Siddiqui Kappan recently got bail from the Supreme Court in the UAPA case. But still a screw is stuck regarding his release.
Why the case of release stuck after bail from court?
Even after Siddiqui Kappan got bail in the UAPA and PMLA cases, there seems to be a delay in his release. According to a report in The Indian Express, Kappan got bail in the UAPA case in September. But even after more than three months, the bail has not been verified.
In its report, The Indian Express quoted Kappan’s wife Rehana Rehana as saying that earlier no one was being found for bail verification. Because for this only a person from Uttar Pradesh was needed. Later two persons got ready, one of whom was Roop Rekha Verma, the former Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University.
Regarding the latest case, Kappan’s wife said that it has to be seen what are the conditions laid down by the court for bail. We hope that there will be no more difficulties.
On the other hand, Kappan’s lawyer Mohammad Danish said that due to the delay in the bail verification, the matter of release is getting stuck.
He further added that, “The verification process usually does not take more than a week. We got the order of the Supreme Court on 9th September. We gave bail within 10 days, but even after three months the verification has not been completed. Now it has to be seen what conditions of bail are imposed in today’s order.”
As a condition of bail in the UAPA case, two bonds of Rs 1 lakh each had to be filled and deposited.
According to a report in The Indian Express, on getting bail from the Allahabad High Court, Kappan’s wife Rehana said, “I was not expecting bail as the lower court had rejected his (Kappan) application. It has been more than two years since me and my children lived like this. Only when he is standing in front of me will I be able to believe that he has been released.”
Siddiqui Kappan has been in jail for two years
Siddique Kappan is in jail for the last two years. In October 2020, the UP police arrested Kappan and other accused when they were on their way to cover the Hathras rape case.
Initially arrested under apprehension of breach of the peace, he was later booked under the UAPA, alleging that he and his accomplices were involved in inciting communal riots in the wake of the Hathras gangrape-murder and were trying to disrupt social harmony.
