The PlayStation VR2, the new revolution from Sony
After marking the video game industry with the PlayStation in 1994 and becoming the leader in virtual reality in 2016 with the PSVR, Sony intends to continue on its way. The PS4 has set some pretty remarkable new records, and the PS5 is following the same path. With the PlayStation VR2, the Japanese firm wants to write a new page in its history by offering an ultra-competitive, high-performance headset to take virtual reality to another level.
This time, the objective is no longer to offer small experiences with an entry-level solution to introduce this technology to players. With the PSVR2, the idea is to design real games, similar to the titles found on PS5. Experiences of several hours that will push the limits.
For this, the PSVR2 has two 4K OLED screens (with a display resolution of 2000×2040 per eye). Games will be able to have a frame rate of up to 120 Hz. Of course, everything will be HDR compatible and the headset will offer a field of view of 110 degrees.
To make the experience even more immersive, Sony is integrating a motor that vibrates on its PSVR2 to add an intelligent touch component. Thanks to this, you will benefit from haptic feedback directly on the headset, as on the DualSense PS5. The PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech technology brings the player’s entire environment to life, for even more immersion.
Eye Tracking will also be integrated into the helmet. This revolutionary new technology allows players to perform actions in the game, only with their eyes.
The PlayStation VR2 can be configured in two ways. First, in VR mode, which will allow you to play the games in a 360° virtual environment. This is the main mode of the headset, where you will have content that will be displayed in 4000 x 2040 HDR video format (2000 x 2040 per eye) with a frame rate of 90Hz/120Hz. The second mode is the cinematic configuration, which will allow you to see the content of your PS5 on a virtual cinema screen. In this mode, you will have access to a video format of 1920×1080p, with HDR and frame rates of 24/60Hz, even going up to 120Hz.
The last very practical novelty, which was already found on the Meta Quest 2, is the transparent view, which allows you to have a view of your environment even with the helmet on your head. A feature made possible thanks to the integrated cameras which will make it possible to draw a safety zone around the player to play without risking injury.
Finally, to prevent fogging of the helmet screen, the PSVR 2 will have a ventilation system similar to that of the PS5. Despite all the things planned in the latter, the helmet will only weigh 600 grams and therefore promises to be very comfortable and light!
Finally, let’s not forget to talk about the PSVR2 Sense which will be the new controllers delivered with the headset. Overall, it’s a DualSense split into two parts. On the right side, you will have the PS button (PlayStation, to turn on the controller), the Options button, the action buttons (Circle/cross), the R1 and R2 buttons, the right stick and the R3 button. On the left side, you will have another PS key, the create button (Share), the action buttons (Triangle/Square), the L1 and L2 buttons, the left stick and the L3 button.
Among the features of these PSVR2 Sense, they will have the same technologies as the DualSense with haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and a six-axis motion detection system (three-axis gyroscope and a three-axis accelerometer). There will also be a capacitive sensor allowing finger touch detection.
The PlayStation VR2 is therefore expected for February 22, 2023 in France at a price of 599.99 euros. Two packs will be available at launch. For those who wish, it will be possible to buy a separate charging station to plug in your headphones without using your PS5 console.
Here is a summary of the offers available:
- The simple pack, with the PSVR2 headset, the PSVR2 Sense controllers, stereo headphones with €599.99.
- The “Horizon” pack, with the PSVR2 headset, PSVR2 Sense controllers, stereo headphones, a code to download the Horizon Call of the Mountains game at €649.99.
- The charging station at €49.99.
