Five youths died in a traffic accident Friday night after a speeding driver ran a red light and collided with his vehicle on a Minneapolis highway.
Minneapolis police said a state trooper parked on Interstate 35N near 46th Street saw the driver go by at over 100 mph just after 10 p.m.
Before the trooper could attempt to stop the vehicle, the driver left the road and ran a red light at the intersection of Lake Street and 2nd Avenue.
The man who was driving then struck a vehicle carrying five young women, one of them a minor.
Police said the driver responsible for the accident got out of his vehicle and ran from the scene.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the accident, however, all five passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the women killed Friday as Siham Adan Odhowa, 19, Sahra Liban Gesaade, 20, Sabiriin Mohamoud Ali, 17, Sagal Burhaan Hersi, 19, and Salma Mohamed Abdikadir, 20.
Authorities said that after searching the area, Police detained a man and he was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center for evaluation.
Authorities believe the driver was impaired at the time of the accident. His name has not been released by officials until Sunday.
