Colombo. The Sri Lankan army arrested 22 Indian fishermen. Four boats of fishermen have also been seized. These people were fishing in the sea. Sri Lankan army alleges that Indian fishermen were fishing in Sri Lankan waters.
There have been incidents from time to time of Indian fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters. Once again Indian fishermen have come under attack from the Sri Lankan Army. According to Sri Lankan officials, the Indian fishermen were fishing in Sri Lankan waters northwest of Delft Island, Jaffna. These people had gone on boats to catch fish in Sri Lankan waters.
According to the statement, the Sri Lankan Navy carried out a special operation late last night to chase away Indian boats engaged in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters. It has been informed in the statement that 22 fishermen hailing from Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts of Tamil Nadu were apprehended late night near Neduntheevu. Four boats of these fishermen were also seized. They were later taken to Kankesanthurai port and handed over to the Malady Fisheries Inspectorate for further legal action.
