Theodore Kaczynskibetter known as “Unabomber”was found dead this Saturday morning in the cell where he was serving eight life sentences, according to a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The prisoner, who was serving a sentence in a maximum security prison in Colorado until 2021, had been transferred to a medicalized prison in North Carolina due to his state of health, where he died.
At the time of his death, the terrorist scientist, who for decades sent bomb letters, was 81 years old and the cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
According to the newspaper El País, between 1978 and 1995 Kaczynski sent 16 bomb lettersmany of them to universities that caused three deaths and 23 injuries, until he was finally arrested by the FBI in 1996.
Despite his murderous behavior, he had a brilliant career as a mathematician. He graduated from Harvard and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. In addition, he worked as an assistant professor at the University of Berkeley.
His terrorist activity put the FBI in check in the 1980s. In 1995, The Washington Post and The New York Times agreed, at the request of the US Government, to disseminate a manifesto from “Unabomber” in exchange for it to stop attacking.
The text was an allegation against technology in which one could read: “The industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have increased the life expectancy of those of us who live in advanced countries, but they have destabilized society and have condemned human beings to indignity.”
That is why, since 1971, he secluded himself in a cabin without running water or electricityin Lincoln, Montana, where he was finally captured in 1996.
