The Commander Moonikin Fieldsa mannequin that traveled into space, returned to Earth a few weeks ago and It is already on its way to NASA facilities. In Houston.
The dummy emerged a few days ago from the Orion capsulewhich was part of the Artemis I lunar mission, and was prepared to depart Florida’s Kennedy Space Center (where it arrived from space) and head back to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
“Commander Moonikin Campos, a human crew surrogate equipped with sensors for NASA’s Artemis I mission, it is packed in its transport box at the Space Station Processing Center at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 10, 2023, for its return trip to NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston,” NASA reported this week.
“Moonikin Fields traveled moored inside the Orion spacecraft for the mission beyond the Moon and back to Earth”, NASA added after publishing a photo of the famous mannequin who wore an orange spacesuit during the mission.
The story of Commander Moonikin Campos
named in honor of the legendary Arturo Campos an electrical engineer who was instrumental in saving the crew of Apollo 13, held the commander’s seat during the Artemis I mission and donned the shiny new Orion Crew Survival System flight suit.
Moonikin Campos was accompanied by two crewmates, Helga and Zohar. As part of NASA’s collaboration with the Israeli Space Agency (ISA) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), his colleagues tested a radiation protection vest. The three crew members collected data on what future astronauts will experience on future Artemis missions to the Moon.
