The PS5 user experience will take a big leap in quality with these long-awaited new features.

Discord and cloud gaming on PlayStation 5 is coming soon. At least that’s what Tom Henderson, an insider in the video game industry known for his leaks and other confidential information, says. Via his own media, he reveals today that the 7.00 update scheduled for March this year has its share of surprises.

The leaker was already talking about this update in August 2022, the date of which has since been officially confirmed. On March 8, 2023, PlayStation users should finally enjoy Discord directly from their console. This novelty would therefore arrive two years after its announcement in 2021. At the time of these lines, there are no details regarding the functionalities supported by the PS5 client of the voice and text chat service.

Many players are waiting for the possibility of streaming their games directly on a server or a private chat, like what is done via the PC client. Before learning more about it, Tom Henderson assures that another form of streaming will be highlighted in this substantial update: the cloud gaming of PS5 games.

No downloads or disk full

If you own a PlayStation 5, you know that its basic hard drive is far from sufficient. With only 825GB of space (and officially 667GB counting the console system), today’s games are filling up that space too quickly. To counteract this concern and ensure a better experience for its players, Sony has reportedly been working on a cloud gaming feature for some time now.

For now, this function is reserved for retro games included in the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, but could extend to any PS5 title in your possession (with the same subscription). This project, called “Cronus” internally, has been in the testing phase for a few months already, reveal Henderson’s sources.

In this way, games can be launched without waiting and without consuming precious bytes of space. So Sony would try to compete with Microsoft’s xCloud? There’s no mention of that in the insider information, but it’s more than likely a lead.

If the various rumors are confirmed, PlayStation players will enjoy the biggest update since the release of the console. Answer in the coming weeks since the tests of these functionalities in beta must take place soon and end on January 30th.
