On March 21, 2022, we learned from CD Projekt that a new production The Witcher was under development. The news spread quickly, while fans were waiting at the time for the “next-gen” version of the third opus, released in 2016. But since this announcement, very little information has been shared on the title. Today, the studio says that nearly half of the workforce is now turning to the development of The Witcher 4.
This is good news which comes just after the wave Cyberpunk 2077. Although the game was released in 2020, optimization problems caused the DLC to be significantly delayed Phantom Liberty recently available, but also massive corrective patches. The release of the expansion will finally release the immense pressure that was on this franchise, and the developers will be able to get back to work on The Witcher Polaris (code name).
What do we know about the next trilogy?
For The Witcher 4the following games, CD Projekt Red switches from an in-house game engine to Unreal Engine 5. So far, the demos and other games on this latest generation engine have been more than impressive in terms of photorealism. The three games in the saga should not be centered on the character of Geralt of Rivia, as the only shared image shows us. The White Wolf Medallion gives way to a sort of lynx. At the moment, we do not know if these games will be inspired by the books The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski, knowing that the first trilogy hadn’t really demonstrated fidelity either.
Dedicating half a studio to a single game is a huge commitment. The other part of the developers focus on several cross-functional projects. On the side of The Witcher we think in particular of Project Sirius And Project Canis Majorisspin-offs which will take a significant turn compared to the canon work. Cyberpunk 2077 is not to be outdone, with a multiplayer mode in preparation, and surely a continuation of the story, in the form of a new opus or a second expansion DLC.
To avoid another fiasco when the game is released, Colin Walder, who is in charge of sound engineering, explained that the studio was preparing and testing its console versions much earlier in the creative process. It seems obvious that at this stage, the game will be released on the latest generation machines and not on the old ones, to avoid any disappointment.
