Today, Japanese video games are ever more popular – evidenced by the meteoric launch of Persona 3 Reload – and are now divided into a multitude of genres. The Japanese conglomerate Kadokawa Corporationknown for editing and publishing books, audiovisual content and even video games intends to expand its video game division to develop ever more varied titles. If that company name doesn’t ring a bell, some of the studios it owns should be familiar to you. The FromSoftware studio, at the origin of the Souls-like phenomenon genre and more recently the famous Elden Ring is part of the group. Even if players are unaware of the existence of the conglomerate, Kadokawa Corporation nonetheless remains a large part of Japanese industry.
The company does not intend to stop there, since it formalizes today the acquisition of the Acquire studio. Far from being unknown to the battalion, the team of developers founded in 1994 is today at the head of one of the most popular JRPGs. The famous saga Octopath Traveler published by Square Enix is in fact the work of this studio with an almost too discreet name. This acquisition is not insignificant and demonstrates Kadokawa Corportation’s desire to offer a wider choice of titles. As a reminder, the Spike Chunsoft studio, particularly known for the saga Danganronpa is also one of the group’s subsidiaries.
Crystal clear objectives
Kadokawa’s statement leaves little room for doubt. This new video game expertise within the company will make it possible to strengthen existing teams and licenses, in order to produce ever higher quality games. “To strengthen our ability to create new video game intellectual properties as part of our business strategy, we spun off Acquire Corp. a fully-owned subsidiary” we can read in the press release.
“By acquiring this company, which has produced hit titles selling millions of copies, we hope to generate synergies with our existing gaming subsidiaries, strengthen our group-wide planning and development capabilities and improve our range of games for consoles.”One thing is certain: this acquisition could well influence the future ofElden Ring. Kadokawa actually mentions the title of FromSoftware, specifying that the studio will “intensify its efforts to improve profitability in the medium and long term” starting with the release of the long-awaited DLC. Unfortunately, the launch date of this new chapter is still kept secret by the company. Japanese video game aficionados can nevertheless look forward to seeing the Kadokawa group grow and improve its existing franchises.
