The year 2022 was a “catastrophic” for Haiti with nearly 2,000 violent deaths from firearms, according to the organization Guardian of Human Rights, quoted by Telesur.
The rates of disappearances due to gang violence in 2022 are close to 1,400 murder victims and more than a thousand kidnapped. Local media also highlight the violent death of 54 members of the security forces.
Official sources estimate that around 200 criminal gangs operate throughout the country, the majority in and around the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, where they control 60 percent of the territory.
